Unfortunately, most retail vacuum stores don't stock a good selection of backpack vacuums. You're more likely to find them at janitor supply stores, and we recommend that you investigate that option locally before turning to the internet to purchase. Because when all local leads have been exhausted and you turn to the internet, you'll find the variety of vacuums and the documentation of them to be so scattered, it's very time-consuming to compare apples to apples and come to a purchase decision. Here are five things to look for as you make your list of possible models:

Airflow: This is all about suction: the more airflow, the more suction. But it seems like every manufacturer lists a different measurement to rate their product's suction-ability. Some use "Peak Horsepower" (PHP), some use Watts, some use Amperage, still others use Air Flow (CFM). Hopefully the models you are looking at give you the same airflow specification, whether is PHP, Watts, Amps or CFM.

Filtration: Most backpack vacuums have excellent filtration, so that you won't breathe in the dirt you just sucked up. Still, it's good to know if the filtration system is 3- or 4-stage, and/or HEPA.

Weight: Studies of hikers found that carrying more than 13 pounds on the back for extended periods of time was detrimental to heart and lung function. No worries here, all the backpack vacuums we've seen come in well under 13 pounds when empty. The more you need to use it, the lighter you'll want it, but a few pounds here or there may be a secondary consideration to that of noise.

Noise: Again, because this is strapped close to your back near your head, the manufacturers make them as quiet as possible. Most backpack vacuums are between 59 and 75 decibels. Definitely look for one on the lower end of that scale.

Rotary Brush Carpet Tool: This is where backpack vacuums take a bit of a hit. Nearly all of them ship with floor attachments, but to clean carpets you need agitation....you need a beater bar or rotary brush tool. Something that will agitate the carpet fibers and suck up the dirt and lint that is released. If your home is all wooden floors you'll be fine. The no-pile or low-pile carpeting found in public buildings also doesn't really need to be agitated. But regular or deep-pile carpeting found in most homes needs it or it won't get clean. Make sure the model you're considering has an optional rotary brush carpet tool, and order it right along with the vacuum.

Fit: More than anything else, making sure the backpack vacuum fits you is critical. If you're short, you don't want something the length of an oxygen tank strapped to your back, it will hit your tailbone uncomfortably. Some of the longer canisters have joints in them, so they bend with you...that's fine if the joint lines up with your waist properly....if it doesn't, there's no need to pay for that fancy joint is there? Trying on a backpack vacuum before purchase is impossible when buying online, and returning it will cost you shipping (not cheap, even if they are under 13 pounds). But you may have to do that, because ending up with one that fits can make or break your new love affair with the backpack vacuum.
