After much deliberation you have finally decided to get a new ferret. Before you can actually go ahead and get your new ferret home though, certain things need to be remembered. After all, you can't have your new pet come home and raise havoc by doing whatever it feels like doing.

Instead you need to train your little fur ball so that it knows what behavior needs to be avoided and what behavior needs to be adopted and exhibited. Among the first and foremost things you need to remember is that your pet should not be allowed to roam freely in the house in its initial days. Allow the ferret to slowly and gradually get acquainted with its new surrounds while still in the comfort of its cage. As the acquaintance level increases and the animal seems less stressed about its surroundings, you can then think about letting it out of its cage.

Note though that the time your little critter spends in its cage need not go to waste as it can be utilized to do something productive. For instance, this time could serve as the ideal setting for you to potty train your new ferret. Remember that litter box training requires great patience; so much so that it can take up to many months for a ferret to be fully trained therefore do not expect results overnight.

Ideally speaking, the litter box training should commence by locking it inside a small room such as a bathroom or a toilet. Since they usually need to use the litter box as soon as they wake up and right after eating, it is best to restrict the roaming of your ferret at these times. When in the confined space, allow it access to its litter box.

The aim here is to get it to associate going to the toilet with the litter box. Once a ferret begins to establish this relationship, offer him/her a treat to positively reinforce the required behavior. As a rule of thumb, remember never to use physical force to punish your pet because not only will the ferret not understand why it is being punished, but with time it will grow to fear you and will thus try to avoid you.

Once you get your new ferret trained to use the litter box, you will find your relationship with your pet move to a higher level as you will now be able to allow him/her to roam inside your house with ease. However, before you do so, it is important you take steps which ensure the animal's safety and well being.

In other words, you will need to 'ferret proof' your house. For starters, since these animals are highly inquisitive creatures and love to find their way inside small spaces, it is advised that you block all small holes (be it inside appliances or a tunnel leading outdoors). Failure to do so may lead to your beloved creature escaping, getting stuck, or worst of all, getting itself injured. Meanwhile, you could also look into the option of putting baby locks on various cabinets, doors, and drawers in your home as this would prevent it from getting itself hurt.

That said, as ferrets love to nip and bite, it is imperative that you teach it that such behavior is not accepted. Again, it should be noted that you are not to use physical force when training your pet not to nip. All you need to do is to shout a loud 'NO' each time your new ferret bites you. You can again reward it when it begins to obey.
