In a previous article, the basic features of some different models of ultra light or micro light aircraft were discussed along with unique virtues in varieties of design, in this follow up article the technical features of the most popular engines used in them will be looked into briefly.
The Austrian built Rotax machine is by far the most frequent engine used in this type of application because of the great efficiency of the range. It is said that BMW has recently built a very efficient machine (hundred and five horsepower) to be used instead of some Rotax engines at a very reasonable price.
The Rotax engine range begins at the very basic Rotax 447 model with a 40-horse power output, air-cooled, two stroke to the top of the range Rotax 914 turbo, water-cooled, four stroke with a 115-horse power output.
The higher-powered Rotax engines are seen in a wide variety of planes in the high speed and dual seat versions where these engines being two stroke or four stroke are mainly water-cooled. The water-cooled engine may have a great advantage over the basic air-cooled version by the fact that a thermostat controls the working temperature of the engine, optimizing power, fuel consumption and minimizing carbon deposits in the combustion chamber of the engine.
One minor disadvantage of the popular Rotax engines is the fact that it is normally not provided with a mixture control adjustment feature which means that if the pilot / owner wants to fly away from home at different altitudes, the carburetor has to be opened to change main jets with other sizes to have optimal performance of the engine, specific for the altitude he intends to fly. The jet sizes normally work or calibrate at three thousand feet steps. The other restriction here is that, when he flies at say five thousand feet above sea level with his jets fitted for that altitude and he decides to go to ten thousand feet a. s. l., his engine will not perform at its optimum power output, the combustion and exhaust temperatures will drop and high carbon deposits will form inside the engine. If this high altitude flying is continued for extended periods, severe power reduction will be experienced. When this happens, the cylinder heads of the engine have to be removed to clean the excessive carbon deposits inside the combustion chamber and on top of the pistons. If the engine is fitted with a turbo charger, the mixture and altitude will not be a problem at all.
A very handy modification to the Rotax carburetor may be a feature to enable the pilot to adjust his mixture as altitude increases. Surely, the Rotax factory must have thought about the idea but might have decided against the idea for a very good reason. The engine is used for recreational purposes most of the time and training to maintain proper mixture settings may be one of the reasons why such a modification is not considered.
Apparently, the new BMW aviation engine entering the market is provided with a fuel injection system, most probably with a computer, monitoring and adjusting mixture, taking mixture control responsibility away from the pilot.

4870 compared to 8800 ultra size and power?
Ok so I currently have a 8800 Ultra and it barley fits i have an 700 watt power Supply is a 4870 about the same size as a 8800 ultra and is it upgrading to a 4870 going to give me better FPS results? thanks
not worth it, wait 6 months till a faster one is out.
