Firing order for a 1982 351 Windsor motor..?
I have a 1982 Ford F-150 with a 351 Windser engine. It is the California model 351 Windsor engine. It has a sensor down on the crank shaft for the timing (been replaced with new sensor). It is not an electronic ingintion system but does have a coil on it ( been replaced too). Did put the firing order on like a 351 has. but once you get the engine started all it does is pop thru the carberator. The timing is off just enough that it wont stay running. Timing chain and gears looks execellent in it. Is there another firiing order for this California engine model?
RunningMan I prefer to work on my own vehicles if I can enstead of taking it to a mechanic. I also got relation who is a decent mechanic too but the problem that we have really stumped both of us. As of right now the vehicle is in a mechanic shop and they cant even figure out what is wrong with it yet.
I suspect your distributor is 180 degrees out of phase. This is very common on Fords because the distributor drive gear has to slide between the gear teeth on the camshaft and it doesn't always go in too easily. Putting in the distributor requires both vertical and rotational combination of motions and too often one is neglected. You could be 180 degrees out or you could be one or two teeth off.
Find TDC on Number One with the piston on the compression stroke. Pull your distributor and align your distributor rotor so that it points forward. You will have to start the rotor at about the 2 o'clock position to do this. It will rotate to the 6 o'clock position as it goes in. If the distributor base does not fit completely down into the recess on the block, it ain't all the way in. It will give an audible clunk when it's all the way in. This tells you the gears have meshed. Now you know where TDC on One is. Becuase you have moved TDC from somewhere around the distributor cap to the front, you will have to remove and reroute the sparkleads to reflect the new location for TDC 1.
The primary thing is to be sure you know where TDC 1 is. Then be sure your cam gear and distributor drive gear are meshed. Then know which tower on the distributor cap is going to be Number One. After that, route the sparkleads to the various cylinders in the proper order. It should run well enough on the first crank and you can adjust the timing until it runs smoothly after that.
